MAUI CANOE CLUB LAUNCHED
NEW GROUP IS DEDICATED TO RECREATIONAL PADDLING

There are dozens of outrigger canoe racing clubs in Hawaii, with nine on Maui alone. And now there is something new and different - a Maui club dedicated exclusively, from the outset to "Paddling Just For Fun".
The newly formed Maui Canoe Club is promoting the educational and "fun” aspects of Hawaiian outrigger canoeing through recreational paddling -- without the racing component.

Our founding members said at the outset,
'We saw a need for a canoe club to serve those people who are not inclined to participate in competitive racing but want to enjoy the social and health benefits of outrigger canoe paddling. Many of our members are over 50 and just having the time of their lives out on the pristine South Maui waters'.

'Recreational paddling is a great way to enjoy Maui. Paddling affords residents and visitors alike the opportunity to experience the ocean and in a very special way'..
With these thoughts in mind, we quickly learned that a niche market exists that greatly exceeded our expectations. In less than two years operations, our membership is approaching 200.

Maui Canoe Club's education and cultural programs will be ongoing, focusing on instruction in paddling technique, canoe maintenance, safety and emergency procedures. A priority will be programs devoted to the study of and respect for the wonderful sea-life with which we share these waters.

Based in Kihei, this new club was launched January 23 2006. The clubs popularity has grown to more than 160 members and 6 outrigger canoes paddling 3 times a day 5 days a week!

The two most distinctive canoes are the Amelika Uiloa (America the Beautiful) and Hoku Holo O Ke Kai, (Bright Star Traveling Through the Water). Both canoes are "Strikers", built by respected Oahu canoe craftsman, Sonny Bradley.

“I extend my warmest Aloha and good wishes to you all. May you enjoy many exhilarating moments in your wa`a surging through the sparkling waters of Maui - may you infuse your mana and goodwill”, Bradley said.

The one-of-a-kind Bradley Striker - Amelika Uiloa is a very special canoe, built in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attack on New York. It is very distinguishable by its red, white, and blue stars and stripes hull and its dramatic ‘American Eagle’ ama.
